NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Dorchester County Coroner's Office has identified a body which was found in a ditch off Dorchester Road, hours after deputies responded to a shooting nearby on Friday morning.
Coroner Chris Nisbet identified the body as 26-year-old Rashaad Lamarks Banks. Nisbet says it appears that a single gun shot wound to the back is Banks' cause of death, and will be confirmed through an autopsy on Saturday.
Dorchester County sheriff's deputies and North Charleston police investigators responded to the scene near the corner of Appian Way and Dorchester Road around 6:45 a.m. after a motorist driving by spotted the body.
A few hours earlier, deputies responded to reports of a shooting near the nearby Rehab Bar & Grill.
Deputies said at least one victim was taken to Trident Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds in the incident. That victim was accompanied by three other people, but investigators did not know if they also suffered injuries.
Sheriff's investigators say the incidents appear to be related and they are working to obtain surveillance video from nearby businesses. One investigator said it was possible the male victim who died was involved in the shooting, and hid when authorities responded to the scene. That investigator said the victim's wounds did not appear to be immediately life-threatening, and said it was probable he had been bleeding for several hours.
Crime tape was posted on much of the Coosaw Creek Center and investigators said they plan on expanding the crime scene later Friday to continue their investigation. One lane of Dorchester Road is closed for about 50 yards in front of the shopping center.
A woman who owns a nearby business told Live 5 Reporter Mark Davenport she'd found shell casings in the area before, but was still very much surprised to hear about the body.
