CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Skateboarders will have a new place to "shred" in downtown Charleston.

The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission approved the purchase Monday of a plot of land to be developed into a skatepark. The plans have been in the works for years, but a number of setbacks have kept them from coming to fruition, until now.

According to "Pour It Now," a group that has been pushing for the park, the site will be along Oceanic Street, north of Wagener Terrace near the Interstate 26 overpass.

Supporters say the parcel of land measures approximately four acres. The park is expected to be about 40,000 square feet.

"Pour It Now" says they hope they'll have their wheels down in the new park by this time in 2014.

The skatepark will be paid for using $2 million in reserve funding set aside by the commission a few years ago.
