Report: Motorcyclist ran from cops before fatal wreck

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County sheriff's deputies say a man killed in a motorcycle wreck in West Ashley last Friday was running from authorities after he was spotted shortly before the accident exceeding speeds of 100 miles per hour on Interstate 526 with six other riders.

According to an incident report, a pack of riders were seen hitting speeds of approximately 100 mph on I-526 west around 8:30 p.m. When officers attempted to pull the group over on Savannah Highway, four of the seven riders took off down Wappoo Road.

Authorities say a second traffic stop attempt was made near Edgewater Park for two of the motorcyclists, but they fled a second time.

The two motorcycles then lost control when approaching a sharp turn and drove off the right side of the road near 160 Wappoo Road, according to the report.

Officials say one of the motorcyclists hit a tree and was transported to MUSC. The Charleston County Cororner's Office says Beaumont Williams, 20, of Ohio died from injuries sustained in the crash. He was wearing a helmet.

The other driver involved in the accident, 19-year-old Alexander Mock of Goose Creek, suffered minor injuries, according to deputies.

Wappoo Road was closed while officials responded to the wreck.

Deputies say a third rider who fled from authorities, 19-year-old Tanner Yearick, crashed his bike into a ditch on Opal Road near Wappoo Road and ran away. He was later found and taken to Roper Northwoods Hospital for injuries sustained in the wreck.

Matthew Kapp, 20, Yearick and Mock were charged with failure to stop for blue lights. Mock was also charged with reckless driving. All three were booked at the Charleston County Detention Center.

The three riders who originally stopped for authorities were issued warnings, the report states.

All riders involved in the incident are employed by the US Navy, according to reports.
