Upstate deputy finds her horses shot to death

LAURENS COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - An Upstate law enforcement officer said she and her husband found their two horses dead inside a gated pasture on Highway 25 in Laurens County.

Abbeville County deputy Sherri Ashely said she went to check on the horses, Hershey and Lady, on Thursday and could not find them.

She later found them both shot to death in the pasture. Ashley said she believes the horses were shot with a high-powered rifle because of the size of the exit wounds.

"I am absolutely heartbroken. I don't understand if someone wanted to come after me they should have come after me and not my helpless little animals," Ashley said.

One of the horses was shot twice in head just behind the right ear and the other behind the shoulder.

"I don't understand how someone can do this. Whoever did it is cold-hearted. I just want justice," Ashley said.

Hershey was 6-years-old and Lady was 10.

Ashley said the pasture and horses cannot be seen from the roadway and the lock on the gate was not damaged.

Laurens County deputies are investigating.
