WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A 20-year-old man is behind bars for shooting a man in the leg after the victim refused to give him money.

The Charleston Police Department charged 20-year-old Shakiem Jamar Maxwell of North Charleston with attempted armed robbery, first-degree assault and battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Maxwell's arrest stems from an Oct. 15 incident at the St. Andrews Gardens Apartments at 1385 Ashley River Road. According to police, the victim was approached by a man armed with a gun.

Authorities say the suspect then demanded money.

When the victim refused, the suspect shot him in the leg. The victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital for treatment.
