Deputies: Student hit in wrist by stray bullet at cheer practice

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office say a cheerleader who was struck by a bullet at Goose Creek High School was at cheer practice when the incident happened.
According to an incident report, the 14-year-old victim was sitting on the bleachers at cheer practice around 5:25 p.m. Tuesday when she felt what was described as a "very painful, heavy slap" on her wrist. Her wrist then began to bleed.
The report states the student was taken to the hospital where an x-ray revealed a bullet lodged in her wrist. She was treated for the injury and released.
The victim told police she did not hear any gunshots, and did not expect her wound to be from a gunshot.
The Berkeley County School District says the stray bullet is believed to have been fired from an off-campus location.
According to a recorded phone notification message from Goose Creek Principal Jimmy Huskey, the school is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation.
No word yet on any suspects.
Huskey left the message for parents of Goose Creek High, Sedgefield Intermediate, and Sedgefield Middle School students.
Huskey says the schools will follow a normal bell schedule Wednesday, and that safety remains the highest priority of the school district.
