Deputies: Inmate found dead hours after having seizure

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say an inmate at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center was found dead Monday night, hours after experiencing a seizure while being processed.

Charleston County deputies says a male inmate was found unresponsive on the floor of the detention center's medical unit around 11:40 p.m. The inmate was transferred to MUSC, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have identified the inmate as 53-year-old Joseph Grant. The Charleston County Coroner's Office says no foul play is suspected.

According to release, the inmate had a seizure while being processed in the booking area earlier in the day. He was evaluated by medical staff, found to be responsive, and was transferred to the medical unit for further observation.

Deputies say the inmate was initially booked by the North Charleston Police Department on an outstanding bench warrant.

An autopsy will be performed by the Charleston County Coroner's Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
