DANIEL ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Top-seeded Serena Williams' bid for the 1st three-peat at the Family Circle Cup in over 30 years was ended quickly on Tuesday night as Williams was upset by Jana Cepelova, the 78th ranked player in the world, with a 6-4, 6-4 loss.

The 20 year old Slovakian pulled off probably the biggest win of her career in her first meeting against Williams in just 1 hour and 24 minutes.

"It just wasn't my day today" Serena said after the match "She was a really great counter puncher."

Cepelova was honest about what she thought her chances were before the match in her post match interview. Asked if she thought she could beat Serena before the match she answered "No, not really."

The loss ends Serena's 28 match win streak on clay that was started on Daniel Island last year.

Serena's sister Venus had a little bit more luck although she was pushed to limit in her 1st match of the tournament as well. The 11th seed needed 3 sets to get past Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 in a match that took 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Also on Tuesday, Lowcountry native Shelby Rogers had moments where she was in control of her match against 12th seeded Daniela Hantuchova. Rogers was up 5-3 in the 1st set before falling in a tie break. In the 2nd set she rallied back after falling behind 2-0 to take a 5-2 lead. But she wouldn't win another game dropping the match 7-5, 7-5.

After the match, Rogers admitted that while she tries to treat every match the same, playing in front of her home town crowd means so much more.

Another former champion, Sam Stosur also needed 3 sets on Tuesday but she survived to get past Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
