The Isle of Palms Police Department says the Ben Sawyer Bridge is back in service, but still urges drivers to be patient because of traffic delays.

A malfunction locked the bridge in the open position, preventing traffic from crossing shortly before rush hour. At about 5:10 p.m., IOP Police tweeted that the bridge was back in service, but was opening to allow boat traffic through.

The bridge, which connects Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island. The alternate route for people wanting to get to or from Sullivan's Island is the Isle of Palms Connector. Live 5 Traffic Tracker showed major delays along Highway 703, which runs from the Sawyer Bridge to the Isle of Palms Connector.
