JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Coroner says a 58-year-old James Island woman died after stabbing herself. The coroner ruled the death a suicide.
A report released by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office on Thursday states the woman's 10-year-old grandson was involved in an altercation with her and said his grandmother attempted to kill him.
Deputies responded at 10:57 a.m. on Wednesday to a home on Howle Avenue to investigate a report of a stabbing and discovered the woman's body. Deputies were told she and her 10-year-old grandson were involved in a physical altercation, and at some point during the incident, "a knife was introduced," according to Charleston Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson.
Deputies recovered multiple knives inside the home, and at least one outside. Investigators say the boy used a knife to defend himself.
A CCSO report states that the boy ran across the street to a neighbor's home to seek help.
According to investigators, when deputies arrived they learned that the boy was with a witness, a 34-year-old woman, who reported to deputies that the 10-year-old boy told her,"Grandma tried to kill me." The witness said she then called law enforcement.
"Relatives came back to the home where the grandmother was located, and found her deceased," Watson said.
According to Watson, the woman was found unresponsive on the floor of her home and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Authorities say she and her grandson were the only two people in the home at the time of the incident. Watson said the boy was transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries that he sustained during the incident.
