Suspect sought following shooting near N. Charleston playground

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the North Charleston Police Department say they are investigating after one person was shot following an argument near a playground Tuesday afternoon.

Around 5:24 p.m., officers responded to the area of East Montague and Hassell avenues in reference to shots fired.

As officers were checking the area, police say they received more information that there were four males leaving in a vehicle, and one of them was shot in the leg.

A witness told police that he saw four males chasing another male who was shooting at them to get away. Authorities say the suspect continued and ran through a cut in a fence from a playground.

According to the witness, the group of men then got into a burgundy Mercury and left.

An officer spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop and saw one of the occupants in the vehicle was shot in the leg.

The victim was transported to the hospital.

Investigators recovered a shell casing in the area of the playground.

A police report states that during the shooting, multiple bystanders fled the area. Police say one person sustained a minor cut from jumping a fence to get away.
