DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the South Carolina Department of Corrections say a correctional officer who was injured in an incident at a Ridgeville prison has been released from the hospital.
According to SCDOC officials, a total of five inmates and three correctional officers were injured in what prison officials are calling a "disturbance" at the Lieber Correctional Institute Tuesday night.
Authorities say the officers injured were transported to a hospital and suffered from non-life threatening injuries, while the inmates in the incident were treated for minor injuries.
The remaining two officers who were injured had already been released from the hospital.
SCDOC officials have not released many details on the actual incident at the prison that caused the injuries.
Authorities say emergency crews responded to the prison around 9:30 p.m., and the facility was on lockdown throughout the night until 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to prison officials, the disturbance posed no danger to the community.
Several ambulances, fire trucks and law enforcement units responded to the prison.
Prison officials say the incident is under an internal investigation.
