Sheriff's office investigating after body found in Holly Hill corn field

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a body was found in a corn field in Holly Hill.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said the body was found by a concerned citizen who was working in the area along Farm Field Road at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  Authorities say the citizen smelled the stench of something decaying and went to investigate.

"The individual followed the stench and located a shoe in a ditch," Ravenell said."The person called law enforcement and upon our arrival we located human remains behind a bush. At this point, we have not been able to positively identify the individual, so we are not ruling anything out."
