DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - High schools students in Dorchester County are now allowed to bring cell phones to school.
The decision was passed at Monday night's DD2 school board meeting 6-0 with one absence.
Students can use phones in hallways and at lunch but not during class time.
The board said part of the reason the proposal passed so easily is because Ashley Ridge High School, Summerville High School, and Fort Dorchester High School all piloted the new rule and all three principals said it was successful.
Board members said so many people broke the previous rule of no phones allowed during the school year that it was too difficult to enforce properly.
When it comes to student safety, members say the new rule will allow students to communicate with parents in emergencies and get a ride home if schedules changed.
The new rule will be in effect starting this fall.
