BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Lowcountry is home to one of the nation's best drive-in theaters, according to a new survey from TripAdvisor.

The travel site listed the Highway 21 Drive-In Theater in Beaufort as one of America's top 10 drive-in movie theaters.

The survey ranked theaters based on TripAdvisor's Popularity Index, which takes into account the quality, quantity and recency of reviews on TripAdvisor, the company stated in a release.

The Highway 21 Drive-In received five bubbles out of five from 54 reviews, the survey states. TripAdvisor praises the Beaufort facility for "reasonable ticket prices and wallet-saving concession prices," and says the theater has been brought into the 21st century with the addition of digital players and a second screen.

The theater is one of only three in the top 10 to have received a "perfect score" from reviews.

The drive-in theater concept is said to have been born in 1933, when a New Jersey man applied and received a patent for the idea. The drive-in's peak in popularity came in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

"Drive-in movie theaters often evoke a nostalgic feeling for years gone by," TripAdvisor spokesperson Brooke Ferencsik said.

The theater charges $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12, the survey states. It is located at 55 Parker Drive, approximately 1.5 miles from the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort.

It is the only South Carolina drive-in theater that made the list.
