CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff's Office arrested 16 people as part of an overnight roundup on Saturday.
The operation's goal was to serve 98 warrants after an increase in break-ins, burglaries and speeding in Ravenel, Hollywood, and Edisto.
"We do a lot of crime analysis, and when we see spikes in certain areas, we try to suppress it as quickly as we can," Captain John Jacobik of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said.
Most of the warrants were non-violent crimes
Jacobik said many people don't know they have warrants. He said if people change addresses and don't notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of the change, they can miss paperwork and end up with warrants.
During the sweep, the sheriff's office served 33 of the 98 warrants, and they also arrested five people for DUI as part of a traffic checkpoint in Ravenel.
"Basically what we'll do from here is all the intel that we gather tonight, we'll go back and put it together and try to find out when is a good time to get them," Jacobik said.
Jacobik says being able to talk to people can prevent more crime than even the warrants.
"Hopefully something like this will, number one, give the community some confidence that they can live peacefully and, two, put the criminal element, suppress them down for a while," Jacobik said.
