Summerville Town Council hold public meeting on abandoned National Guard armory
SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Wednesday night, Summerville's Town Council meeting will include discussion on what to do with an abandoned National Guard armory on Hickory Street.
The city's parks and recreation department will make a presentation at the meeting. It wants to turn the armory into a gymnastics center and use part of it for multi-purpose rooms for activities.
There's also been support for the neighboring senior center, which says there is a growing number of seniors in the community and the center has hit its capacity. It says some of its members have to park in the grass and they need the armory and its parking lot so they can keep growing.
"The senior population has grown by leaps and bounds and it's going to continue to grow from what all the statistics show," Jean Ott, Executive Director for Dorchester Seniors said. "We really need to expand and it just makes sense for us to expand to a building that is close to us."
The meeting starts at 7:30 pm and after the parks department makes its presentation the public will get a chance to make their own recommendations.
