BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - South Carolina Highway Patrol reports one person is dead and one woman is arrested after a fatal single car crash in Berkeley County Thursday afternoon.
Troopers say 38-year-old Melanie Maguire was arrested and charged with a felony driving under the influence. According to online jail records, Maguire is also charged with first offense of driving under suspension.
Troopers say Maguire and a passenger were traveling in a 2002 Ford Pickup on Cooper Store Road around 5:30 p.m. when the vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, hit a ditch and overturned.
Officials say the passenger, identified by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office as 36-year-old Christopher Hearn, was ejected and trapped under the vehicle. The Summerville resident was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m. He was not wearing a seatbelt, the coroner's office states.
Authorities say Maguire was wearing a seatbelt, and was not injured in the accident.
Black Tom Road was temporarily shut down while crews responded to the scene.
