CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A motorcycle charity ride to honor a Charleston County deputy killed in the line of duty will be held in the Lowcountry next month. The ride will be hosted by nationally syndicated radio host Bubba the Love Sponge.
Bubba's Bikes for Badges is set for Saturday, October 18. Riders will gather at Wild Buffalo Steakhouse in North Charleston, where kickstands will go up at 11 a.m. Riders will return to the restaurant at noon, where lunch will be provided.
Held through the Bubba the Love Sponge Foundation, the Bikes for Badges Charity Ride will honor Charleston County Deputy Joe Matuskovic, who was fatally wounded while responding to a disturbance call at the Gardens of Ashley River apartment complex the night of September 8.
Deputy Matuskovic was laid to rest Monday. His funeral was attended by over 1,000 law enforcement officers from around the nation.
Bubba the Love Sponge, whose show airs weekday mornings on 98Rock, announced on his radio show the day after the shooting that he would be sending a $10,000 check to Matuskovic's fiancee to assist the family. He also said plans would be in the works to hold a Bikes for Badges ride to provide additional assistance.
"The last thing Mrs. Matuskovic needs right now is to worry about house bills, car insurance and things like that. She needs to focus on closure and her family," said Bubba.
According to the show, they are hoping to raise enough additional money to further help Deputy Matuskovic's family, as well as the family of Larry Britton, a Charleston County Volunteer Rescue Squad member who suffered a fatal heart attack while providing assistance to officers during the incident.
The Bubba the Love Sponge Foundation provides immediate relief to the widows of fallen law enforcement officers in his syndicated markets, with funding raised through Bikes for Badges rides and the annual "BTLS Foundation Raffle."
On-site registration for the ride will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for $25. Online pre-registration for the ride is $20.
