Ex-SC State counsel sentenced to probation
Charleston, SC (AP) - A former chief of staff and general counsel at South Carolina State University has been sentenced for his role in a public corruption case at the historically black school.
Acting U.S. Attorney Beth Drake says 51-year-old Edwin Givens was sentenced Thursday to six months probation.
In May, Givens pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents. Prosecutors say he received a $500 kickback in 2011 for helping direct the entertainment contract for the Orangeburg school's homecoming dance to a company operated by another man who was ultimately acquitted in the case.
Although Givens returned the $500 to the school, prosecutors said he later denied knowledge of the kickback.
Givens had been cooperating with the government. Former board chairman Jonathan Pinson is awaiting sentencing on multiple charges, including racketeering.
