A North Carolina-based burger chain is planning a minimum of five locations in the Charleston area, a move that will put more than 250 people to work, according to the burger franchise.

Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries will open its first store in North Charleston at 8409 Dorchester Rd. on Oct. 13, the first in a series of locations planned by restaurateurs John Greene and Craig Smith in the Charleston area, according to restaurant spokesman Andy Moore.

The Goldsboro-based company's locations sport a 1950s-style diner motif and are known for its hamburgers and frozen custard, Moore said. Hwy 55 won BurgerBusiness.com's "Best Burger" award in 2012, according to a release from the company.

The chain already has other locations in South Carolina as well as North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio and Virginia. In 2014, the first international locations opened in Canada and the United Arab Emirates.
