MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - A Berkeley County Scrap worker died Thursday morning after an attempt to cut a barrel with a cutting torch resulted in an explosion, according to the Berkeley County Coroner's Office.

Coroner Bill Salisbury says 33-year-old Stephen Kuffel, a Moncks Corner resident, was transported to a local hospital after an explosion at the facility around 8:48 a.m.

Salisbury says Kuffel was using a cutting torch to cut the top out of a barrel that once stored a flammable liquid.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine his exact cause of death, the coroner says.

The death is under investigation by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office and the Moncks Corner Police Department.
