CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The minister of a downtown Charleston church is hoping same-sex marriage would someday be legal in our state.

The banner in front of the Circular Congregational Church on Meeting Street is a replica of the gay pride rainbow flag.

Members of the church even marched with the banner in the gay pride parade this year.

Senior Minister Jeremy Rutledge says their goal is to welcome everyone while promoting commitments.

He has been performing marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples at the church.

Part of a message on their website states they welcome people of different sexual orientations, socio-economic status, racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The church is part of the United Church of Christ, which approved the rainbow banner and uses it across the nation.
