Chocolate was revealed as the "secret ingredient" required in all of this year's entrants back in July.

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Home brewers from around the Lowcountry competed in a battle of the beers at the Iron Brew Festival Saturday.

Red Rocket Brewing took the top prize with their chocolate pale ale, according to Mellow Mushroom Avondale's Facebook page.

Guests sampled the brews, each of which featured chocolate as an ingredient. The competition required each brewer to experiment with that ingredient, which was announced by organizers at a reveal party in July.

The winning brewer will be distributed to Mellow Mushrooms throughout the state, organizers say.

"Home brewing is an enormous culture and it's grown every year. And the opportunity to take something that you've made in your own home, your own facility and have it reproduced by the headmaster brewer Chris Brown and distributed out where you and your buddies can go out and buy a pint of your own beer is pretty awesome," Mellow Mushroom co-owner Johnny Hudgins said.

Teams of up to four people each must submit one beer - brewed and bottled themselves - that features the secret ingredient. Past secret ingredients included honey, lavender, rosemary, coriander seeds and basil.

A portion of the profits from the festival went to the local nonprofit The Galvalas Kolonko Foundation, which assists students with disabilities who want to attend college.
