KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - For Conde Nast readers, Kiawah Island is one of the best islands in the world, beating the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Kauai.

The island was honored in this year's Conde Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Awards, which also heaped high praise on the city of Charleston.

Kiawah Island, located 21 miles south of Charleston, features 10 miles of beach, 30 miles of biking trails and wildlife, receives roughly 100,000 guests annually, according to Mike Touhill of Kiawah Partners.

Conde Nast Traveler says the island is dominated by the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which hosted the PGA Championship in 2012.

Palawan, one of the 7,100 islands that make up the Philippines, was the only island in the world to outscore Kiawah.

Readers also named Charleston as the second-best city in the world. This year's survey ranked locations based on more than a million votes by 77,000 readers, Touhill said.
