The Ashley River Bridge has reopened after a drawbridge malfunction closed it shortly after 11 a.m.

It happened when the drawbridge failed to fully close, workers said, leading to a major traffic jam along Lockwood Drive.

Workers were seen walking the bridge, attempting to determine why the bridge would not fully close as motorists who had been headed into West Ashley stood next to their parked vehicles waiting for word on when the problem would be corrected.

The bridge appeared to close completely just before noon, but workers examined the bridge before allowing traffic to cross.
