COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - Republican Henry McMaster has returned to elected office in South Carolina as the state's lieutenant governor.

With most precincts reporting, McMaster won more than 60 percent in Tuesday's general election. Democratic State Rep. Bakari Sellers took nearly 40 percent.

McMaster served for eight years as attorney general and lost a 2010 bid for governor. He has served in several advisory roles to Gov. Nikki Haley and was also previously the state's U.S. Attorney.

Sellers wrapping up his fourth term in the state House. The son of civil rights icon Cleveland Sellers sought to make history as South Carolina's first black lieutenant governor.

This is the last race for the position. Because of a constitutional change voters approved in 2012, gubernatorial nominees will select their running mates starting in 2018.
