BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Sangaree Elementary School went on lockdown Friday afternoon as Berkeley County Sheriff's deputies searched for a would-be armed robber in the area, the sheriff's spokesman said.

Berkeley County deputies say a postal carrier reported a man approached her and attempted to rob her, according to Berkeley County Sheriff's spokesman Dan Moon. The would-be robber showed her a gun, but did not get away with anything and fled on foot from the scene near Sangaree Parkway, Moon said.

The school was on lockdown for 10 to 15 minutes, Berkeley County School District spokesman Chip Sturgis said. The lockdown was lifted at 2:14 p.m., he confirmed.

The postal carrier was not injured.

Deputies were searching near the area of the school, and asked the school to go into lockdown merely as a precaution, Moon said.
