MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The Mt. Pleasant Fire Department has released a video packed with safety tips for frying your Thanksgiving turkey.
Frying a turkey is a Thanksgiving tradition for many in the Lowcountry that could spell trouble for first timers looking to cook up a crispy bird.
"The danger of mixing water, oil and fire can turn a great family tradition into a tragedy," says John Poole with the Mt. Pleasant Fire Marshall Division.
The video, released Wednesday by the Town of Mt. Pleasant, lists the following common turkey-frying mistakes that are easily avoidable:
- Don't overfill the pot
- Don't use a frozen turkey
- Don't fry indoors
- Don't forget your ABC extinguisher
- Don't put water on a grease fire
The video shows two demonstrations of how a turkey fry can turn into a blaze if simple instructions are not followed.
