Report: Man beat, threatened to kill woman in motel room

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 30-year-old James Island man is behind bars after allegedly holding a woman against her will overnight at a motel, threatening her life at gunpoint, and attempting to smother her with a pillow.
Charleston County deputies responded to the Econo Lodge on Savannah Highway Friday morning around 1:56 a.m. for back up after an on-duty deputy spotted a man assaulting a woman.
According to an incident report, officers arrived to witness the suspect, Tyrone William Robinson, grab a woman by her throat and slam her into a wall outside of Room 251. He then pulled the victim into the room when approached by officers.
Deputies were able to detain Robinson. They then spoke with the victim, who claimed Robinson had been holding her in the room against her will since 5 a.m. Thursday, and said that if she left he would shoot her.
While in the room, the victim says Robinson repeatedly choked her, tried to smother her with a pillow, and held a gun against her head and threatened to kill her after a previous escape attempt.
The report states officers searched the room and found a loaded 9mm pistol behind the mini fridge, as well as a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance.
Robinson was arrested and charged with assault and battery high and aggravated nature, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
He is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
