CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The College of Charleston's soon-to-be defunct swim and dive team may have options to keep it afloat.
The Save CofC Swim and Dive campaign is exploring partnerships with other area pools, according to alumna Chris Lietzow.
In November, the college announced that its men's and women's swim and dive team will cease, after the current season. Athletic Director Joe Hull cited expensive repairs to the Stern Center pool as a reason for the elimination of the team.
Lietzow said several pools, including ones in West Ashley, North Charleston and Mt. Pleasant, have agreed to host the team.
"We're obviously ecstatic about the news," he said.
The pools would charge a fee of "thousands" and the team and its supporters are fundraising by collecting donations and selling athletic wear, Lietzow said.
According to the college, the 57 student-athletes can either remain at the school with their scholarships, or transfer to compete at a different school.
