NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Officers have ramped up their efforts to curb prostitution in North Charleston, resulting in the arrest of seven suspects over the past two nights.
North Charleston Police Department Sergeant Dan Bailey says four people were arrested late Wednesday night as part of an undercover sting using the website Backpage.
He says the department posted a fake ad on the website, with respondents instructed to meet at a hotel. After the suspects gave a price for a sex act or offered sex, they were arrested.
Bailey says three others were arrested Thursday night along Rivers Avenue for soliciting prostitution.
Another was arrested on Remount Road near the Charleston Farms neighborhood.
"I think it's a long term thing to deal with," said resident Eddie Garves. "It's one of the old professions in the world, it's been here forever and it could be curbed, but I don't see it going away."
The following suspects were arrested and charged with soliciting prostitution:
- Sara Marie Johnson, 25
- Jordan Suzanne Reynolds, 24
- Crystal Lynn McKenzie, 32
- Michael Nathan Robinson, 30
- Sarah Curry, 30
- Florence Dean, 61
- Alicia Ashley McLaughlin, 32
Bailey says first time offenders were issued a fine of $470 or 30 days in jail with repeat offenders facing steeper consequences.
