CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police released surveillance pictures Friday of a man they want to question about an accident involving a CARTA bus.
Police released a surveillance image of a man Friday they say interfered with a bus driver, causing an accident Thursday shortly before 11 p.m.
The bus driver told police the man boarded the bus at Meeting and Romney Streets after asking the driver whether the bus would travel to a store on Cosgrove Avenue, according to an incident report.
The man took a seat at the rear of the bus, the report states, but when the driver began to drive, the passenger got up and walked to the first passenger seat opposite the driver, the report states.
The driver told police he tried to talk to the man, but the man did not answer. The driver said the passenger then grabbed the steering wheel, causing the bus to collide with an SUV on the King Street extension.
After the collision, the man fled from the scene on foot, the report states.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the man pictured should contact the Charleston Police Department on-duty central detective at (843) 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at (843) 554-1111.
