Flooding shuts down several downtown Charleston streets

Charleston police are reporting several streets in downtown Charleston have been shut down Wednesday morning because of flooding.

The following streets are closed, according to authorities:

  • Bennett between Ashley and Halsey
  • Bennett and Gadsden
  • Wentworth and Barre
  • Ashley between Tradd and Broad

South Market Street had been closed earlier Wednesday morning but reopened shortly before 11:30 a.m. Ashley Street between Race and Fishburne Streets, as well as the area around Hagood Street, have also reopened, according to police spokesman Charles Francis.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for the entire Lowcountry Wednesday morning until 2 p.m.

In addition to the tornado watch, Charleston is also under a wind advisory until 5 p.m., and a coastal flood advisory until noon.
