JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley Electric Cooperative is telling customers to be alert for a possible scam.

The way it works is someone will call a customer telling them that if they don't pay using a MoneyPak, which is a pre-paid card, their services will be cut off immediately.

On the Live 5 Facebook page, a company posted that they had dealt with the same problem with the person who called saying they were the general manager of Berkeley Electric's billing department.

A Berkeley Electric spokesperson say that it will never request payment over the phone, and that they've seen other co-ops in the area dealing with a similar scam.

The company said while it has been trying to deal with the scam internally by sending out messages to customers, the scam has been going on for at least the past few months.
