The Citadel introduces VMI's Duggar Baucom as new head basketball coach
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Citadel has announced the school will hire VMI head coach Duggar Baucom as the school's next head basketball coach.
The Citadel held an introductory press conference Monday afternoon with Athletic Director Jim Senter and Baucom at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
Monday's announcement of the new hire comes just two days after a source at The Citadel confirmed to Live 5 News that Baucom was next in line for the head coaching gig.
"This is an exciting day for Citadel basketball," said Senter. "Duggar has a proven track record of success, not only on the court, but more importantly, in building young men of character off the court."
Baucom has spent the last 10 seasons as the head coach of the Keydets where he put together a record of 151-159, including going 75-91 in conference play which included 9 years in the Big South and last season back in the Southern Conference.
He reached the postseason once, in the 2013-14 season leading the Keydets to the CIT semifinals. His best team may have been in the 08-09 season when they went 24-8 including a win in Rupp Arena over Kentucky.
Baucom will be replacing Chuck Driesell who spent five seasons with the Bulldogs before the school opted to not renew his contract following last season. Baucom had been a finalist for the Bulldogs opening five seasons ago before the job went to Drisell.
