The three-year-old boy found wandering alone in a Summerville mobile home park remains in state custody.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the boy being found by himself at approximately 7:15 a.m. Monday at the South Main Mobile Home Park on Forest Circle Road.
At approximately 10:15 a.m., the boy's mother called police to report her child missing, according to Summerville Police Capt. Jon Rogers.
The child could remain in custody of the state's Department of Social Services for up to 45 days while the investigation continues unless a judge determines they should maintain custody for a longer period of time, according to agency spokesperson Marilyn Matheus. The child may be returned his mother's custody sooner, she said, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Authorities have not released any information on what their investigation has found so far.
