CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police arrested a man in connection with the May 28 robbery of a taxi cab driver who they identified through tracing a phone number.

Ryan Lewis, 21, is charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Lewis was identified by the telephone number used to call the taxi cab company, according to Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis.

Police say a driver for a cab company was dispatched to pick up a man who wanted to be driven from Fleming Road to the intersection of Remount Road and Attaway Street in North Charleston at approximately 5:45 a.m.

The driver told police he was flagged down by a man near the 200 block of Fleming Road. The man told the driver he didn't have enough money for the fare but would get more money.

Police say Lewis then turned as if he were leaving, then quickly turned back around, pointing a handgun at the driver and robbed her.

Lewis was being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
