CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A vigil will be held Thursday morning in memory of an 18-year-old who was fatally stabbed last year in downtown Charleston.

The vigil for Brandon Bennett will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park off Vendue Street.

Police say the fatal stabbing happened the morning of June 11, 2014 at the home on Congress Street.

The suspect, later identified as as 17-year-old Terell Smith, reportedly broke into Bennett's home and stabbed the victim to death while he was asleep.

Smith was later arrested in Alabama, and extradited back to Charleston. He was charged with murder, attempted murder, possession of a deadly weapon during a violent crime and first-degree burglary.

Days after Bennett's murder, a vigil was held in Waterfront Park, where blue balloons were released in his honor. That was Bennett's favorite color.
