Flowers, messages left outside church shooting site
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Mourners have been leaving flowers and messages in front of a church where nine people were fatally shot Wednesday night.
Police say the victims were gunned down in what they're calling a hate crime by a 21-year-old who was captured Thursday afternoon in North Carolina.
The atmosphere was quiet and somber outside the Mother Emanuel AME Church Thursday night as people added flowers, stuffed animals, balloons and candles to a makeshift memorial outside the church where crime scene tape remains in place.
The victims are: Cynthia Hurd, 54; Susie Jackson, 87; Ethel Lance, 70; Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, 49; The Honorable Rev. Clementa Pinckney, 41; Tywanza Sanders, 26; Rev. Daniel Simmons, 74, who died at MUSC; Rev. Sharonda Singleton, 45; and Myra Thompson, 59.
Mourners connected by a shared grief have been praying together, exchanging hugs and shedding tears with each other outside the church.
