CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - New information is being discovered about the oldest victim in the downtown Charleston shooting that took place on Wednesday.
Susan "Susie" Jackson, 87, of Charleston, was a Burke High School graduate.
Long-time friend, Felicia Breeland, said they used to play outside with each other when they were younger at their homes on Elizabeth Street.
"We used to skate up and down the block," Breeland said. "The policemen would block off the road so we could play."
Jackson was an active member of Mother Emanuel AME church.
She sang soprano in the church choir and was a part of the Senior Citizens group.
Breeland recalls the last time she saw Jackson, which was Wednesday afternoon, as they planned a menu for the group's Senior Citizens meal in August.
"She voluntarily said, 'well I'll bring the rice," Breeland said. "She was going to make the rice for all the senior citizens."
A neighbor next door said while he didn't know her well, she was an extremely nice woman. He said she would always say hello from her balcony as he walked his dog or headed to work.
"She cared about others," Breeland said. "She would lend a helping hand, and do anything she could help with. She was that type of person. Very friendly."
Breeland adds she wasn't slowing down with her old age either. She was always trying to help out at church or with her family and friends.
"She was a loving person," she said. "She was helpful, she would just go and do things. She didn't care how old she was, she was still active."
As for Jackson's family, Breeland says they're hurting. She's been over several time to visit with the family since the news came out.
"I'm almost like another sister to them," Breeland said. "I was in shock, I could hardly sleep. They have all my prayers and sympathies."
Jackson was a relative of Tywanza Sanders, the 26-year-old who also died in the shooting. Breeland said he is either the nephew or grand-nephew to Jackson.
She was also a good friend to Ethel Lance, another victim in the shooting.
Members of Jackson's family attended the bond hearing for Dylann Roof Friday.
They did not make a statement in court.
