CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The first steps have been taken in the prosecution of the alleged gunman in the Emanuel AME Church shootings.

A witness to the shooting, Felicia Sanders, met Monday with state and federal prosecutors in the case against Dylann Roof.

According to a news release, Sanders will be a material witness for the state and federal government.

Sanders lost her son, 26-year-old Tywanza Sanders, and her aunt, 87-year-old Susie Jackson, in the June 17 shooting.

Tywanza Sanders was the youngest victim and Susie Jackson, his great aunt, was the oldest victim. They were among nine people shot inside the church after a Bible study.

Police arrested Roof, 21, on Thursday, the day after the shooting. He is charged with nine counts of murder and one weapon charge.
