WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A nearly 200 unit apartment complex is being built off Ashley River Road near Sam Rittenburg Boulevard.
Trees have already been torn down from the area over the past week and half.
The seven acre land near Westwood Plaza Shopping Center will be called Ashley River Residences.
It will soon be entering the construction phase, bringing more drivers to the area.
"I feel like development is at an all-time high around here," Jack Burg, who lives in West Ashley, said. "I just wonder where all the cars are going to go."
Milton Thomas, with Lee & Associates for the property, said with the new Harris Teeter going in next to Barnes & Noble and the growing population, the location was a prime spot for the complex.
However some are concerned about the traffic it could bring.
"I appreciate the fact that we are expanding, but I think too much growth sometimes could possibly impede on what we do have going on," Stacie Washington, who grew up in West Ashley, said.
"[Highway] 61 in particular, I don't know if you've ever tried morning rush hour or evening rush hour, but it's ridiculous already," Burg added. "It's just
going to be, I mean where are all the cars going to go. That's my main thing."
Colin Johnson just moved from Greenville to the area for school.
He said traffic hasn't been a major issue for him, but could see how the growing developments could pose a problem.
"I think that would just lead to more construction, because they're going to have to expand the roads, to accommodate the traffic, so yeah I can see that being a problem," Johnson said.
"I understand we're growing and that's a good thing, but at the same time it's just creating too much other issues, especially with the traffic," Washington added.
The complex will have a variety of one, two, and three bedroom apartments.
The goal is to have construction completed by August of next year.
