Suspect sought in downtown Charleston armed robbery, assault

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Investigators are on the lookout for an armed robber who stole money from a man and assaulted his girlfriend in downtown Charleston.

On Monday night, Charleston police officers responded to Beaufain Street for a report of shots fired.

As officers were investigating they received a call about the gunshot victim being dropped off at a fire station on Wentworth and Meeting Streets.

Officers then met a man at the station who said his girlfriend had been shot.

The man said he and his girlfriend had traveled to downtown to buy weed. The man told officers he and his girlfriend eventually wound up traveling in his car with his drug dealer to an alleyway on Kirkland Lane off Wentworth Street.

According to the man, after getting out of the vehicle, they walked up a flight of stairs where he saw the dealer motion to his waist band, and at that point the man said,"He knew things were about to go bad."

The man said the dealer pulled out a gun, waved it around, and searched him.

A police report states the dealer then threw the man's girlfriend on the porch by her hair, then dragged the man by his shirt to his car. The man said the dealer also struck his girlfriend in the head causing the suspect's gun to go off.

The man reported the dealer then went into his car and took $900.

Following the incident, police say the man then drove off with his girlfriend inside and went to the fire station.

Officers said after hearing the description of the dealer from the man, they realized they had seen a man earlier fitting that description traveling on Wentworth Street.
