WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Members of a West Ashley church are devastated after floodwaters destroyed the church building over the weekend.

Paul Rienzo, lead pastor of Crosstowne Christian Church on Bees Ferry Road, said church members used kayaks Monday to enter the building and attempt to assess damage from waist-high water and save whatever they could.

"We had done some preparation for it, but when I walked in, it really just kind of knocked the wind out of me knowing the building, it's probably destroyed."

Church members managed to pull out computers and a sound system from inside after water flooded the entire building.

Crosstowne Christian Church, which was started in 1997, has about 700 members, Rienzo said.

For the next few months, the congregation will meet at its regular times at Citadel Mall Cinemas.
