JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A United States Postal Service forever stamp costs 49 cents, but a local man is set to spend a much larger amount of money on stamps this week.
Eugene Platt will purchase $1,000 worth of Breast Cancer Research stamps this week at the James Island Post Office, in honor of his late wife, Mary.
"Breast cancer is such an insidious disease," Platt said. "I had no idea until my late wife succumbed to it."
Platt had purchased $1,000 worth of Breast Cancer Research stamps annually for 10 years after this death of his wife from breast cancer in 2003. He said is unsure if he will continue the tradition on a yearly basis.
According to USPS, proceeds benefit the National Institutes of Health and the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense.
As for the 1,666 stamps Platt will soon own, he said he can use them entirely within one year by writing hand-written cards, and by sending packages to his two grandchildren in New York.
