CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Crews with SCE&G have secured a gas leak in downtown Charleston Thursday afternoon.

Officials with the Charleston Fire Department announced at 4:33 p.m. that crews had secured the gas leak in the area of Ashley Avenue and Sumter Streets.

CFD officials say streets will be reopening shortly.

Ashley Avenue is closed between Fishburne and Congress Streets, according to Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis.

Dispatchers said shortly after noon that Charleston Police and Fire had responded and that Rutledge and Reid Streets had been blocked off.

Charleston firefighters said people living on those streets and some neighboring streets were evacuated from their homes.

CFD officials say Burke High School student pickups and dismissal should avoid Fishburne Street. Authorities are asking motorists to use President Street to reach the school.

Officials with SCE&G have not yet released the cause of the leak.
