BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating after a Berkeley County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a woman who allegedly pointed a gun at deputies.
The Berkeley County Coroner has identified the woman as 36-year-old Laura Lemieux.
According to Berkeley County spokesperson Michael Mulé, deputies responded to multiple 911 calls of an active shooter along Whisper Way in Saint James Estates in unincorporated Goose Creek at around 7:30 Thursday evening. One caller said Lemieux was shooting the firearm toward residences as well as in the air.
Upon arrival, deputies reported Lemieux randomly firing a gun. Mulé said deputies first used non-lethal force in an attempt to gain custody of the suspect.
When she allegedly pointed her gun at law enforcement, a deputy shot her, according to Mulé.
She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead just before 9 p.m. Thursday evening.
SLED is on scene conducting an investigation.
