CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Mayor Joe Riley presides over his last Charleston City Council meeting Tuesday.
Council is expected to formally rename Charleston's Waterfront Park in honor of Riley.
It was less than a month ago that city council surprised the mayor with the proposal. Riley had no idea that was in the works when it was presented at the council meeting just before Thanksgiving. His family surprised him at that meeting as they were sneaked into the balcony.
Council members said the park is a symbol of what Riley has done for Charleston in his 40 years of leadership.
It was unanimously approved.
Among the other items on the evening's agenda is final passage of a measure to honor the victims and survivors of the Charleston church shootings in June.
Riley, who has served as mayor of the Holy City since 1975, is leaving office after 10 terms.
