ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Bond was denied for an inmate accused of assaulting a nurse during a medical exam at a hospital on New Year's Day.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office charged 28-year-old Bryan Pierson with kidnapping and first-degree assault and battery for the Friday incident that happened at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

"Orangeburg County Magistrate Maree Williamson stated she felt the 'safety of the people of Orangeburg County' would be at risk with a bond," OCSO officials said."She set bond on the assault charge at $15,000 surety while denying bond on the kidnapping charge."

According to authorities, Pierson was being held at the Orangeburg County Detention Center on a burglary charge when he was taken around 5 p.m. Friday by detention center personnel to the hospital for x-rays.

"During the medical examination, Pierson grabbed a nurse from behind, putting 'her into a choke hold restricting her breathing and her movement,'" an incident report states.

"She told Orangeburg County Sheriff's investigators dispatched to the hospital that Pierson 'also was twisting her head sideways,'" authorities said.

The sheriff's office said correctional officers at that point reacted by grabbing Pierson and subduing him with a Taser.

Investigators reported that the nurse had injuries consistent with the assault she described.

"We're just fortunate this young lady didn't have injuries any worse that what she suffered," Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said. "It could have been worse than what it was."
